City surpasses housing goal

During a press conference on February 5 at The Reserve at Thunderbird, a newly constructed mixed-income housing development, the city of Phoenix announced the achievement of a significant milestone: the creation or preservation of 53,000 housing units. This accomplishment surpasses the initial target set in the Housing Phoenix Plan, which aimed for 50,000 units by 2030, reaching this goal five years early.

As of December 31, 2024, a notable 20.7 percent of these units are classified as affordable, comprising 5,118 newly created and 5,907 preserved units. Additionally, 24.7 percent are classified as workforce housing, totaling 13,165 units aimed at families earning 120 percent or less of the area’s median income. Market-rate housing constituted a significant portion with 29,022 units developed.

The city also announced various initiatives to enhance housing affordability and accessibility. These include zoning ordinance modifications to expand housing options, an increase in multifamily housing zones covering 36,480 acres, and plans to add 1,382 shelter beds since 2022. Furthermore, more than 35 affordable housing communities now offer free high-speed Wi-Fi, benefiting 4,200 low-income residents by connecting them to job opportunities, telehealth services, and educational resources.
