Church Makes Bold Move: Sells Scottsdale Land to Invest in Cambodian Property
The ongoing construction along Scottsdale Road has become a familiar sight for residents and travelers alike. This significant improvement initiative by the City of Scottsdale aims to enhance traffic flow in the future. However, the present situation has sparked frustration among many due to detours, dust, and construction vehicles blocking lanes. Amidst these challenges, there’s a positive outcome emerging from the project.
The impact of construction extends beyond commuters; local businesses and residents are also feeling the effects. One notable example is Desert Foothills Lutheran Church and School, which faced a unique challenge when the city needed to acquire an easement for its roadwork. The city made an offer for the land, which the church ultimately accepted.
With the funds from the easement sale, Desert Foothills considered various uses, including renovations to their sanctuary and the establishment of a new worship space. However, the congregation decided to turn their focus toward a compelling mission in Southeast Asia instead.
In partnership with Garuna Ministries, Desert Foothills acquired land in Cambodia for an amount equivalent to the easement sale. They successfully raised additional funds to construct an elementary school on this land, designed to accommodate over 200 students. Remarkably, the school’s construction is progressing ahead of schedule, with plans to welcome students this fall.
“Every time I see the construction on Scottsdale Road I smile, and hope others will now too because it led to the construction of a school, and the sharing of Jesus, in Cambodia,” Pastor Jeremy DaPena remarked, highlighting the project’s unexpected blessing amidst local disruption.
