Chorus uplifts for 96 years and counting

The Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix will bring their sense of musical camaraderie and joy to the community Sunday, Dec. 15, as they present “Holidays with Orpheus” at Camelback Bible Church.

The Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix has a rich history spanning nearly a century, marked by a commitment to musical excellence and community engagement. Founded in November 1929, shortly after the stock market crash, the chorus made its debut on Christmas Day that year, performing on Phoenix radio station KTAR. Executive Director Mitra Khazai noted, “The sounds of their voices had a healing impact on our community during tough times.”

Since its inception, the chorus has performed at venues from supermarket openings to prestigious locations like Carnegie Hall and the Concert Hall of Vienna. Over the decades, it has seen membership fluctuate, particularly during World War II when numbers dwindled to just 21. Today, the chorus thrives with a diverse group of members from various professions, all united by their love for music.

Khazai emphasized the civic mission of the chorus, saying, “We give back to our community in some capacity – that’s always been a part of the Orpheus DNA.” This commitment is evident in their financial support of the Phoenix Boys Choir, which owes much of its foundation to the Orpheus.

Members of the chorus span ages from their 20s to 80s, with many being retirees. Khazai highlighted that participation in music promotes cognitive and physical health, especially in older age, while fostering essential social connections. “When you sing with others, you share your emotional life,” she remarked, describing the profound bond created within the group.

This emotional connection also resonates with audiences, particularly during the holiday season. Khazai shared, “Our patrons often come in stressed but leave uplifted and joyful. Choral music provides a healing power that many need right now.”

As they prepare for their 96th season, rehearsals continue weekly at Cross Roads United Methodist Church. An open rehearsal for prospective members will occur on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and auditions for the second half of the season are scheduled for January.

The Orpheus Male Chorus will present “Holidays with Orpheus” on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 3 p.m. at Camelback Bible Church. Ticket prices range from $10 to $25 and can be purchased through their official website or by contacting the box office.
