China wins 6th gold in diving in Paris Olympics to stay on track for unprecedented sweep of all 8

SAINT-DENIS, France — China clinched its sixth gold medal in diving on Thursday at the Paris Olympics, edging closer to a historic sweep of all eight golds at the Games.

Xie Siyi secured the gold on the 3-meter springboard, with his teammate Wang Zongyuan earning silver. This result mirrors their performance in Tokyo three years ago. Osmar Olvera of Mexico took bronze.

Xie scored 543.60 points across six dives, while Wang followed with 530.20 points. Olvera ended the contest with 500.40 points, whereas American diver Carson Tyler landed in fourth place with 429.25 points.

Earlier in the Olympics, Olvera had taken silver in the men’s 3-meter synchronized event alongside Juan Celaya. Mexico’s tally in diving stands at 17 medals, the highest in any discipline for the country.

China’s dominance in the men’s 3-meter springboard spans seven of the last eight Olympics, the exception being the 2012 London Games where Russia’s Ilya Zakharov took gold. This year, Russian divers are absent due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, China has claimed 53 out of 70 gold medals in diving. Impressively, from the 2008 Beijing Olympics onward, they’ve won 33 of 38 golds in the discipline.

Diving events at the Paris Olympics conclude with the women’s 3-meter springboard on Friday and the men’s 10-meter platform on Saturday.
