Winter weather in northern Arizona

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff has issued warnings for potential snow in parts of northern Arizona this weekend, particularly affecting Grand Canyon Village, Supai, and Jacob Lake.

As of Saturday morning, areas in western Coconino and Yavapai counties experienced scattered snow, including along Interstate 40 near Seligman and US 89A at Jacob Lake. The forecasts predict snow showers from Saturday through Sunday evening for elevations above 5,000 feet.

Snow accumulation may vary, with expected totals ranging from a trace amount up to 2 inches in locations such as Peach Springs, Grand Canyon Village, Supai, and Prescott.

Officials emphasize caution for those driving or hiking in these regions. The NWS advises motorists to reduce speed and be wary of slick road conditions. Hikers venturing into the canyon should consider using hiking poles and ensuring good foot traction, as trails may be treacherous.

Grand Canyon National Park alerted visitors via social media that recent snowfall has made roadways and trails slippery, urging hikers to be particularly careful. The park noted that conditions have changed and are now noticeably slick, heightening the need for awareness.

Early reports also confirmed that as of 8:15 AM, snow had begun accumulating in the areas surrounding the Grand Canyon South Entrance, creating a layer that necessitates careful navigation for any travelers.
