Child in Critical Condition After Smith-Enke Rollover Accident
A two-car crash occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. today at the intersection of W. Smith Enke and N. Vintage Roads, resulting in a child being transported to the hospital. Responding to the incident, the Maricopa Police and Fire Department found a white Chevy Traverse overturned on its roof.
Smith-Enke Road was temporarily closed between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa, leading to significant traffic disruption. Many motorists were forced to make U-turns to exit the area.
An ambulance was on scene by 3:54 p.m., where emergency personnel assessed a woman and a small child seated near the overturned vehicle. Further investigation revealed a white sedan that had evidently collided with the Chevy Traverse.
While airbags deployed in the Traverse, they did not appear to have been activated in the sedan. Two individuals were seen being taken to the ambulance, one on a stretcher and another, a woman, moving slowly while holding her forehead.
“One vehicle did roll onto its roof but thankfully no major injuries were reported,” stated MPD spokesperson Monica Williams. “A child was taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution.”
By 4:27 p.m., the Traverse was upright and prepared for towing, with two child seats removed from the vehicle. The Maricopa Fire Department Engine 571 left the scene around 4:36 p.m.
As the investigation is still ongoing, officers on the scene refrained from commenting further. Williams mentioned that the situation was expected to be resolved by 5 p.m.
