Chemehuevi Indian Tribe celebrates decades-long Indian Days festivities

This Friday, Havasu Lake will become a gathering place as people come together to celebrate California Native American tribes. The Chemehuevi Indian Tribe is set to host its annual Indian Days celebration at Nuwuvi Park, welcoming both tribal and non-tribal members.

Vice Chairwoman Sheridan Silversmith expects an attendance of around 200 to 250 participants. The festivities kick off early Friday morning with a tribal member race, marking the start of a series of scheduled activities over the two-day event.

“September is a month of celebration for all California tribes,” Silversmith stated. Operations officially commence at 4 p.m. with cooking contests featuring salsa, frybread, and chili beans, followed by a men’s and women’s horseshoe competition at 5 p.m. Attendees can also enjoy a kickball session at 6 p.m. at Warriors Field.

Cultural performances and the popular tug-of-war competition are anticipated highlights. This year sees a shift in entertainment, as the South Image Chicken Scratch Band will perform Saturday evening, replacing traditional cultural acts.

“We are introducing something new with a tribal band that leans more towards contemporary music,” Silversmith expressed. Saturday’s activities will start early, featuring a 5 a.m. fun run/walk. Planned events throughout the day include archery, water balloon tosses, canoe races, elder games, and more.

A special dinner sponsored by Havasu Landing and Resort is scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by the band’s performance at 7:30 p.m. A cornhole tournament will cap off the night at 9 p.m.

Silversmith notes that Nuwuvi Park is located half a mile from Havasu Landing. She urges visitors from Arizona to arrange transportation ahead of time to the event area.

“It is essential to recognize the significance of celebrating the California tribes during their dedicated month,” Silversmith added.

Nuwuvi Park is situated at 13251 Havasu Lake Rd., Lot K. A roundtrip on the Havasu Landing Ferry costs $4, with departures available north of the London Bridge. For ferry details, interested parties can call 760-858-4593 or visit havasulandingcasino.com/ferry-schedule.
