The Valley, the sprawling metropolitan area including Phoenix, holds a diverse and growing population. According to the 2020 Census, it is the 11th largest metropolitan area in the United States, hosting 4,845,832 residents.
The Valley includes cities like Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, and Tempe among others. Its population density varies between these urban centers but they collectively contribute to the area’s significance. The delineation between “East Valley” and “West Valley” hinges on their geographical relation to Phoenix.
Maricopa County, encompassing this vast metropolitan area, is the fourth largest county in the United States by population. With 4,485,414 residents, it holds about 63% of Arizona’s total population according to the 2020 Census. The county spans over 9,224 square miles, making it larger than several U.S. states.
One of Maricopa County’s crowning features is its extensive park system. It boasts roughly 120,000 acres of open space filled with trails, nature centers, and campgrounds. The county’s seat, located in Phoenix, is also Arizona’s capital and the fifth most populous city in the United States.
The county is named after the Maricopa, or Piipaash, Native American Tribe.
