City of Chandler, community to celebrate Preston Lord Day Monday

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The community is set to honor the life of Preston Lord Day on September 23, marking what would have been his 17th birthday. This event emanates a powerful message against teen violence, a rising concern within the East Valley.

Chandler’s mayor, Kevin Hartke, plans to read a proclamation making September 23 officially Preston Lord Day. The gathering will take place at The Stillery, with Hartke emphasizing the need to celebrate and remember a life tragically cut short at a Halloween party last year.

“We are going to be honoring the life and contributions of Preston,” Hartke stated, underscoring the collaboration with Preston’s family to advocate against the backdrop of teen violence affecting Chandler and its neighboring areas, including Gilbert and Queen Creek.

In response to these events, Hartke noted that the city is implementing measures aimed at reducing teen violence, such as banning brass knuckles for individuals aged 18 and younger and prohibiting unruly gatherings.

Vice Mayor OD Harris remarked on the importance of recognizing the collective impact of violence on families, stating, “It’s a people thing.” His comments highlight that the issue transcends racial or ethnic lines, connecting everyone in the community. “We are declaring that violence will not be tolerated here,” Harris stressed.

Brandon Juniper, general manager at The Stillery, shared that the color chosen for Preston Lord Day is orange, which honors Preston’s favorite hue. “It’s about community and bringing awareness as local businesses support the family and each other,” he added.

Seven individuals, including both juveniles and adults, face first-degree murder charges related to Preston’s death. Their trial is scheduled for July 2025.
