Celebrate 40 Years of Carefree with an Unforgettable “Wings and Wheels” Bash
The Town of Carefree is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary with the “Wings and Wheels” event in collaboration with SkyRanch at Carefree. The festivities occur on Saturday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering a fusion of aviation, automotive history, and community engagement against the backdrop of the serene Sonoran Desert.
The event will kick off with a tribute to veterans, featuring The American Legion’s flag-raising ceremony. A heartwarming performance by the youth choir of Our Lady of Joy will precede an exhilarating flyover by The Falcon Warbirds, setting the tone for a day filled with pride and celebration. Attendees can explore about 20 planes and 50 vehicles, showcasing a diverse array of models and eras.
For those interested in hands-on experiences, remote control plane and drone demonstrations will take place, along with piloting simulators provided by Aerial Engagement. Live music will enhance the vibrant atmosphere, with the Varsity Sports Show serving as the event’s MC.
It’s important to note that vehicle and plane entries are restricted to members of the SkyRanch Airport community. Guests can enjoy a variety of food and beverage options, including coffee from Chickies Coffee to start the morning right. Local favorites such as Gangster AZ with their burgers, Ken’s Dogfellaz serving hot dogs, and Habaneros Street Tacos will offer delicious meals. For dessert, Frios Gourmet Pops promises to satisfy cravings.
SkyRanch has been integral to Carefree’s identity since the 1950s, serving as a gathering point for aviators before the town was officially established. The “Wings and Wheels” event honors this legacy and highlights SkyRanch’s ongoing contribution to the community.
Numerous local organizations are collaborating to ensure the event’s success. Sanderson Lincoln will display vehicles, while the Arizona Pilots Association will assist throughout the day. Foothills Caring Corps will provide shuttle services, the AZ Rangers will assist with security and traffic, and the Kiwanis Club of Carefree will provide seating for attendees. The Carefree Fire Department will also be present to enhance safety during the event.
“Wings and Wheels” is not just a celebration but also an opportunity to delve into Carefree’s rich history, culture, and community. Whether one is an aviation buff, a car enthusiast, or simply seeking a fun family outing, this event promises something for everyone.
In a separate upcoming event, Carefree will usher in the holiday season with “Carefree Lights Up!” on November 30 at 5 p.m. The celebration features the lighting of a 20-foot Christmas tree next to the Veterans Memorial in the Carefree Desert Gardens. Festivities will include music performed by the Desert Hills Presbyterian Church Bell Ringers and the Joyful Sounds choir, prior to a tree-lighting countdown led by Mayor John Crane.
Post-lighting festivities will shift to the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion, where guests can enjoy a string performance by the Jubilate Conservatory of Music and warm themselves with hot chocolate from No Filter Coffee. The evening will continue with a holiday concert showcasing local talent, including performances by student singers and dance groups.
Additionally, the 15th annual Veterans Day Celebration is scheduled for Monday, November 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. The event will honor veterans, featuring keynote speaker U.S. Army Master Sergeant David Allwine, who will share insights from his service as a Vietnam War veteran. Other highlights include stories from the Imprints of Honor program, a presentation by Honor Flight Arizona, and musical tributes from local artists.
This series of events underscores Carefree’s commitment to community and remembrance as it celebrates its past while looking forward to a bright future.
