CD7 Hopeful Daniel Hernandez Seizes Bystander’s Phone Amidst Heated Confrontation in Bisbee

A recent Democratic political event in Bisbee became contentious when an audience member directed a question about Palestine to congressional candidate Daniel Hernandez. This incident occurred following the Bisbee Pride Parade on June 14 and has sparked significant discussion among attendees.
Video footage indicates that Hernandez intervened in a clash involving his sisters, State Representatives Alma and Consuelo Hernandez, and another participant at the forum. Attendee Scott Blades captured the incident on camera after a woman asked Hernandez about Palestine.
Blades, attending the parade with rival candidate Adelita Grijalva, reported on Facebook that the event escalated after the woman questioning Hernandez was escorted away. Alma Hernandez, known for her strong pro-Israel stance, pursued the woman, resulting in a heated exchange.
According to Blades, Daniel Hernandez attempted to defuse the situation but became visibly frustrated when he saw Blades recording. He then allegedly grabbed Blades’ phone and threw it to the ground.
The brief video clip shared by Blades shows Alma asserting, “This is unacceptable,” while the woman insists she will not leave. Consuelo then confronts the woman, accusing her of “cornering” her previously. The video concludes when Daniel obstructs the camera with his hand.
In his post, Blades expressed concern over the behavior exhibited during the confrontation. He questioned the appropriateness of a Congressional candidate interfering with someone’s ability to document a public event.
In a statement issued through a campaign spokesperson, Daniel Hernandez conveyed regret over the incident. He noted its particularly emotional context, occurring shortly after a shooting outside his campaign headquarters, where he and Alma reside.
Hernandez elaborated, stating, “This unfortunate incident unfolded during a moment of heightened emotion for my family. I aim to protect my family and ensure everyone’s safety.” This statement reflects ongoing challenges faced by the family following escalating threats against Alma due to her political views.
Hernandez has been vocal about the threats his sister received and explained his decision to live with her for safety. He emphasized that violence has no place in politics.
Daniel Hernandez, currently one of five Democratic candidates in the special primary election scheduled for July 15, is running to fill the seat left vacant by the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva. Hernandez rose to prominence after he helped save former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords during the 2011 Tucson mass shooting, which profoundly shaped his public service career.
