Cave Creek Museum Presents to feature the story of Lorna Lockwood

Arizona is honoring its trailblazing figure this March as part of Women’s History Month. On Saturday, March 8, 2025, historian Kraig Nelson will lead a discussion on the groundbreaking achievements of Lorna Lockwood, the first woman state Supreme Court Chief Justice in Arizona and the United States.

Lockwood’s journey was deeply influenced by her father, a pioneer educator in Cave Creek. His remarkable legal career inspired her to pursue law, ultimately leading her to a distinguished role within the judiciary.

Nelson highlights Lockwood’s remarkable versatility as she transitioned through various roles, including Supreme Court opinions lawyer, legislator, and Superior Court judge, before becoming chief justice. Her impact extended beyond her official duties.

“Justice Lockwood was a fierce advocate for children’s welfare and women’s rights,” Nelson states. “She addressed neglected issues with courage, proving to be an enthusiastic and insightful jurist.” Her legacy is characterized by a commitment to justice during a time of significant societal change.

According to Nelson, Lockwood’s influence remains vital. “She broke substantial barriers in what was predominantly a male profession, paving the way for future generations of women in the legal field.”

Nelson’s extensive background includes pivotal roles at local historical organizations, with his tenure at the Cave Creek Museum beginning in 2008. He later became the museum’s official historian, co-authoring significant publications about the region’s history.

Attendance for the event requires a reservation. While members can join for free, non-members will need to purchase a $10 admission ticket. More information and registration are available on the museum’s website.

The Cave Creek Museum, which focuses on preserving the area’s rich historical and cultural legacy, is located at 6140 E. Skyline Drive in Cave Creek, Arizona. For inquiries, the museum can be contacted at 480.488.2764.
