Cave Creek Illuminates the Night with 5th Star Gazing Party

The Cave Creek Dark Sky (CCDS) organization invites the public to its annual free Star Gazing Party on Saturday, October 26th, 2024. The event will take place at the Spur Cross Recreation Area parking lot from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. founder Bruce Arlen anticipates a large turnout, hoping to attract hundreds of attendees.

This year’s event will feature a telescope raffle, with tickets available for $10 (cash only). Attendees can look forward to an engaging presentation by Mark Johnston, a NASA ambassador and astronomy expert. Johnston will transmit real-time deep space images, showcasing the wonders of the universe on four large monitor screens.

Stuart Brackney, President of the Phoenix Astronomical Society, will also address the crowd. Participants will have the chance to observe galaxies, constellations, and Saturn’s rings, while learning fascinating astronomy facts. Last year’s “Outdoor Planetarium” show drew 600 attendees, setting high expectations for this year’s event.

CCDS is dedicated to promoting a quality-of-life philosophy that values a dark night sky. The organization teaches the importance of reducing light pollution, which obscures stargazing opportunities. “By shielding our lights and turning them off when not needed,” Arlen states, “we help keep the sky dark and stars visible for all.”

Additionally, CCDS aims to assist the Town of Cave Creek, its residents, and businesses in achieving official Dark Sky Community status through community events like this star gazing party.

Attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs and dress warmly for the occasion.
