As the 35th season of Friday Night Fever progresses, high school football teams across the Valley ventured into new territories, engaging in matchups beyond their usual regions.

September has officially ushered in football season, and excitement among fans is palpable. The action continued with Week 2 of Arizona’s premier high school football program.

Many teams took to the field this past Friday night, promising a showcase of talent. Notably, one game featured a team that journeyed all the way from Colorado to compete in Phoenix.

In our highlight segment, we focus on the Week 2 Game of the Week: Casteel versus Queen Creek.

Casteel at Queen Creek emerged as a fan favorite, claiming nearly 96% of the 4,253 votes cast for the Game of the Week. It was a thrilling encounter, with Queen Creek (2-0) edging out Casteel (1-1) in a narrow 39-38 finish.

Later in the evening, Peoria and Raymond S. Kellis faced off for their sixth matchup since 2009. In a noteworthy performance, Kellis (2-0) triumphed over Peoria (1-1) with a score of 28-7.

The Prescott Badgers traveled down to face the Thunderbird Titans, who celebrated a decisive 36-14 victory. This win propelled the Titans to a 2-0 record, while Prescott fell to 1-1.

Meanwhile, the reigning Open Division champion Liberty Lions dominated their game against the Sandra Day O’Connor Eagles, winning 46-0, which pushed Liberty to an impressive 2-0 record.

On Thursday night, the Hamilton Huskies secured their second win of the season, defeating the Desert Ridge Jaguars 35-21, leaving Desert Ridge still searching for their first win.

This week also highlighted Brophy’s Devin Fitzgerald, known for his spectacular touchdown catch that clinched a previous game. Fitzgerald, son of NFL star Larry Fitzgerald, shone once again as Brophy faced the Regis Jesuit Raiders, achieving a commanding 44-0 victory.

In a traditional Tempe rivalry, McClintock bested Marcos de Niza 54-20, marking an impressive 27th win in their history. Saguaro faced Mountain View, resulting in a 57-27 win for Mountain View, with an explosive first half of 50 points.

The Boulder Creek Jaguars encountered a tough outing against ALA-Queen Creek, resulting in a 56-7 loss that marked their second defeat of the season.

Notably, Round Valley renamed their iconic domed stadium in honor of legendary coach Tot Workman, recognizing his remarkable contributions, including two back-to-back state championships in the early 1980s.

In our segment “On the Road,” journalist Lina Washington visited Mesa, where Westwood faced Skyline. In a nail-biter, Westwood clinched a 28-27 victory, advancing their record to 2-0.

After the match, Washington engaged with Westwood’s head coach Brandon Large, capturing insights into the team’s performance.

Finally, the Week 2 Sweet Play of the Week nominations have been unveiled. Each week, fans will vote for their favorite play, with opportunities for weekly winners to vie for the Sweet Play of the Year title.

Arizona remains home to a vibrant sports scene, showcased by major teams across various leagues. The Valley embraces events like the Fiesta Bowl and the WM Phoenix Open, further solidifying its status as a sports hub.
