Cardinals Organization’s Sole Gold Medalist: Prepare to Be Surprised!
Whitney Dosty, an employee of the Arizona Cardinals, has made headlines after winning gold at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, adding to her impressive athletic achievements.
Despite the Cardinals’ roster containing 53 players, none have claimed Olympic gold—except for Dosty, who boasts two. Her latest victory comes just weeks after an intense final match in Paris.
“I always wanted to win a gold medal,” Dosty shared, displaying her prestigious award. “Every time I engaged in sports, I believed I was destined to win one.” Transitioning from gymnastics to swimming, she eventually found her true calling in volleyball.
Standing at 6’3″, Dosty faced challenges in gymnastics but thrived once she discovered volleyball. “When I started playing volleyball, I knew I would win a gold medal—I just didn’t expect it would be in sitting volleyball,” she remarked.
A standout athlete during high school in Tucson, Dosty’s talent continued to shine at the University of Arizona. She faced numerous obstacles, including multiple injuries, yet she persevered and continued to play professionally overseas.
However, a significant setback occurred when a severe ankle dislocation in Europe led to extensive medical challenges. After exploring various treatment options, she opted for ankle fusion surgery. “Three surgeries later, my ankle’s now fused. I’m pain-free,” she said, reflecting on her decision.
The surgery altered her ability to play traditional volleyball, but it inspired a new path. “My mom was watching the Invictus Games on TV; that opened my eyes to sports despite disability,” Dosty explained. This newfound perspective led her to research sitting volleyball.
Thanks to her prior volleyball experience, she secured a position on Team USA’s women’s sitting volleyball team, reigniting her quest for gold. The game mirrors traditional volleyball but with players seated on the court, requiring them to remain grounded when they hit the ball.
In Tokyo for the 2021 Paralympics, Dosty celebrated her first gold medal victory. This recent gold in Paris came against their fierce rival, China, and was clinched with a nail-biting final set.
“The moment was surreal,” said Dosty. “There’s nothing like standing on the podium, gold medal around my neck while the National Anthem plays.” Despite these monumental achievements, life returned to normal quickly. She returned to work filled with gratitude for her supportive colleagues.
The buzz around her potential participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Games has already begun, with coworkers expressing excitement for her next endeavors. “I have to enjoy this moment,” she stated, acknowledging the thrill of her recent accomplishments while contemplating future opportunities and aspirations.
