'They knew how to get into these cars': String of car thefts reported in the East Valley

GILBERT, Ariz. — A local couple, Charles and Allison Smith, is raising awareness about rising car thefts in their neighborhood following the theft of their vehicle. The couple’s 2013 Hyundai Elantra was reportedly stolen overnight while parked in their driveway near Higley Road and Loop 202.

Allison expressed her concerns, stating, “It’s almost like it’s not just a coincidence. You know they have a plan to do this. It’s really terrifying.”

After reporting the incident to Gilbert police, the Smiths learned that the suspected thief may have accessed their neighborhood in another stolen vehicle. “There was a car that was left running,” Charles mentioned. “The police officer then goes to investigate the car. He runs the plates on it, finds out it was stolen.”

Approximately 48 hours later, the Smiths’ car was located abandoned in a nearby area, showing signs of tampering. “They said our car was left outside running all day,” Allison noted, highlighting a concerning pattern. A neighbor informed them about a similar theft occurring around the same time.

The Smiths discovered their vehicle was damaged, with the ignition lock cylinder completely removed. “They knew what to take and they knew how to get into these cars,” Charles remarked.

This spike in thefts, particularly targeting Hyundai and Kia models, has been linked to a social media trend that teaches users how to start these vehicles without a key. Hyundai acknowledged that vulnerable models lack crucial anti-theft measures and has since introduced a free software update to address the issue.

While the Smiths were not aware of the trend before their experience, Allison urged others to be vigilant: “Take precautions and just know that there are people who are targeting these cars right now for whatever reason.”

Hyundai provides a list of affected models eligible for free anti-theft software updates, including the 2018-2022 Accent, 2011-2022 Elantra, and various others. Customers can schedule an appointment online to install the update.
