California counties sue Home Depot for overcharging customers

San Diego joins several other California counties in a newly-filed lawsuit.

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office has joined other California counties in accusing Home Depot of overcharging customers.

District Attorneys from San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Alameda, San Bernardino, and Sonoma allege that Home Depot advertises items for one price but inflates them at the register, according to a lawsuit obtained by CBS 8. The complaint claims numerous pricing inspections have shown a consistent pattern of overcharging at Home Depot stores throughout California.

According to the suit, the alleged overcharging has been ongoing for at least three years, a direct violation of multiple sections of the Business and Professions Code. The lawsuit accuses Home Depot of “deceiving or confusing the public” by advertising one price and charging a higher price at the point of sale. Additionally, it alleges the company made “misleading statements” about certain products, violating section 17500 of the Business and Professions Code.

However, the complaint does not include specific examples of false advertising. A spokesperson for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.

CBS 8 has reached out to Home Depot for a response. This article will be updated with its response.
