Burro Struck and Killed in State Route 95 Collision; Driver Escapes Injury
An early morning collision on State Route 95 resulted in the death of a burro while leaving the driver unharmed. The incident took place around 6 a.m. near Price Drive, according to Lt. Frank Hayden of the Lake Havasu City Police Department.
The driver, behind the wheel of a Chrysler sedan, was traveling southbound when the vehicle struck the burro. Despite the impact, the driver reported no injuries, and the vehicle was subsequently towed away. Unfortunately, the burro did not survive and succumbed to its injuries before animal control could arrive.
This marks the second such incident in recent months. In July, a motorist fatally collided with a burro on State Route 95 near Airport Centre Boulevard. That driver veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with a truck and resulting in a tragic loss of life.
In response to the rising number of similar accidents, officials installed electronic warning signs along the highway to alert drivers about burros. Furthermore, the Bureau of Land Management has initiated a roundup of 100 burros to relocate them from hazardous areas.
To enhance safety, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced plans for a cattle guard project near the State Route 95/I-40 interchange. This initiative aims to reduce the risk of burros wandering onto roadways, thereby increasing safety for both animals and motorists in the Lake Havasu City area.
