Buckeye basketball allstar living his dream one basket at a time

Maison Bartman, a talented 17-year-old from Buckeye, Arizona, is set to represent the United States at the Sports Union for Athletes with Down Syndrome European Championship in Italy.

Maison’s love for basketball began at the tender age of two. His mother, Rebecca Bartman, recounts how he immediately took to the sport, prompting them to buy him a hoop to practice on. “He’ll find a hoop anytime, anywhere,” she said, underlining his relentless passion.

Despite being diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Maison’s journey in sports has been inspiring. “When he was born, doctors told us it was Down Syndrome,” Rebecca recalled. Initially filled with concern, she quickly recognized Maison’s determination and exceptional spirit.

“We gave him every opportunity, and he’s shined in everything he’s done,” Rebecca noted. Maison has played multiple sports, but basketball remains his ultimate favorite. He recently tried out for the European Championship, enduring five intense days of rigorous drills and practices.

Maison impressed coaches by sinking 32 consecutive shots. Soon after, he learned he was one of just six athletes representing the U.S., marking a historic moment as it’s the first American team to compete in this event.

With opponents like Hungary, Finland, Turkey, and reigning champion Italy on the schedule, the road won’t be easy. Yet, Maison remains confident. “Every one of them is unique and excited,” Rebecca said, expressing hope for a strong performance.

As the competition approaches, Maison is intensifying his training on the court. Both he and his family hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams, regardless of their challenges. “Don’t let a diagnosis stop you,” Rebecca encouraged parents of children with disabilities.

Looking ahead, Maison aims to compete in the Special Olympics in Chile in 2027, and dreams of becoming the first Harlem Globetrotter with Down Syndrome. “I hope we win,” Maison declared, embodying optimism and determination.
