TPD assistant chief tapped to head Boise police

Tucson Police Department Assistant Chief Chris Dennison has been announced as the prospective new police chief of Boise, Idaho, pending city council approval.

Mayor Lauren McLean of Boise made the selection from three final candidates. “Chris understands the special trust that must exist between a police department and the community it serves,” McLean stated. “I am confident he will care for our officers and our residents, working collaboratively across the region to keep Boise a safe and welcoming city for everyone.”

Dennison’s career with the Tucson Police Department began in 2004. He currently oversees multiple departments, including central investigations, forensics, and the Counter Narcotics Alliance. Raised in Tucson, Dennison brings years of experience to his new role.

The city is working on scheduling Dennison’s confirmation by the city council and determining his start date. Current Chief Ron Winegar will step down on September 20.

His selection follows a comprehensive process that included community surveys, focus groups, and a selection committee. The top three candidates also participated in community open houses in July.

Over 1,500 individuals responded to the community survey, expressing a preference for a chief who values transparency, responsiveness, and accountability. *

Council Member Colin Nash praised the mayor’s rigorous selection process and expressed confidence in Dennison’s leadership abilities. In a statement, Dennison shared his gratitude for the opportunity. “Boise is a vibrant and growing city, and I look forward to working collaboratively with the community to ensure it remains a safe and welcoming place for all residents,” he said.
