Missing man found dead under collapsed Phoenix warehouse after days of searching

After nearly three days of searching, Phoenix firefighters believe they found 22-year-old Oswaldo Montoya.

PHOENIX — After almost three days of tireless efforts, Phoenix fire crews located what they believe to be the body of missing Freeport warehouse worker Oswaldo Montoya. The discovery occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

“This is not the outcome we wanted,” stated Phoenix fire captain Todd Keller. “He was an amazing man. He was an amazing dad.”

The search started at about 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday after a microburst struck the Freeport warehouse on 43rd Avenue and Polk Street. The severe weather event caused part of the building to collapse, trapping Montoya inside.

“We have cranes, we have bobcats with grappling attachments,” Keller explained. “We completely exhausted all our resources in the fire department.”

Working as a forklift operator for nearly a year, Montoya was on the night shift when the microburst hit. Unfortunately, he was the only one who did not make it out.

“We were told he worked around the center of the warehouse and that’s where we focused most of our attention on,” Keller noted. “We did find the individual close to where it was described.”

This heartbreaking event comes just two weeks after the birth of Montoya’s child. His family remained close to the search site throughout the entire ordeal.

“The family is the main focus and they have been our main focus this entire incident,” Keller emphasized.

The Phoenix Fire Department has now handed over the operation to Phoenix police, who will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the identity in the coming days. There is no current timeline for when the clean-up will be completed or when the warehouse will be operational again.
