Board of Supervisors to Deliberate on Ambitious 2,267-Acre Solar Initiative

The Mohave County Board of Supervisors is set to discuss a large-scale solar project during their meeting on Monday. This ambitious proposal seeks to establish a solar facility encompassing 2,267 acres, situated just outside Kingman. The project, named the Amor Solar Project, LLC, plans to utilize around 1,700 acres for solar panels among other infrastructure, as stated by the group’s attorney, Peter Furlow.
This site is located approximately 15 miles northeast of Kingman, adjacent to the existing Peacock Substation. Notably, the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission previously voted against the project, unanimously denying a request for a general plan amendment and a rezone from agricultural residential to special development manufacturing zone. Concerns raised by both the County staff and local residents influenced this decision, indicating significant community resistance.
During the October meeting where the denial occurred, Furlow presented the rationale behind the project. He emphasized its potential to enhance energy output and highlighted the availability of land. However, when questioned about the local usage of the generated energy, Furlow expressed optimism but acknowledged the absence of concrete plans. “We would love to do business with a local Arizona utility, but we cannot say at this time that it’s already a done deal because we haven’t signed any agreement to date,” he remarked.
Prior to these discussions, Mohave County had instituted an eight-month moratorium on solar projects. However, in June, the Board of Supervisors voted narrowly—3-2—in favor of permitting solar developments, albeit limited to areas zoned for “Light Industrial” use. This shift in policy opens the door for future solar initiatives, but local sentiment remains critical.
Residents and board members will gather in Kingman at 9:30 a.m. on Monday to further examine the implications of the Amor Solar Project.
