Sorrento resident Christopher Johnson, 23, was arrested on October 10, 2024, following a series of reckless driving incidents that culminated in a crash and a subsequent hit-and-run.

Officers with the Maricopa Police Department responded around 5:30 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of an older white Toyota Camry colliding with a directional sign at the intersection of Bowlin and White and Parker Roads. This particular crash occurred just days before the activation of a new stoplight at that intersection, which had been known for its history of accidents.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, stating that Johnson was found unconscious at the wheel, with drug paraphernalia visible in his lap. Upon regaining consciousness, he fled the scene, prompting a bystander to follow and relay his license plate information to police.

Police traced Johnson to his home on Mediterranean Way, where they found him attempting to enter his garage. After initially resisting, he surrendered to authorities. Notably, Johnson had visible injuries, including blood on his mouth and shirt.

During police questioning, Johnson initially provided conflicting statements but ultimately conceded to driving the vehicle. He expressed remorse for fleeing and attributed his actions to a panic response following the crash. He denied using drugs or alcohol, claiming a six-month sobriety.

However, subsequent witness accounts contradicted his claim, with several individuals reporting they had seen him in possession of a pipe and other drug-related items. Johnson is currently being processed for a drug DUI; however, the status of charges remains pending due to a backlog in lab results.

As of now, Johnson has been booked into the Pinal County Jail on charges of criminal damage and hit-and-run. If convicted, he could face a maximum of one year in prison, alongside potential fines reaching $4,000 and the possibility of having his driver’s license suspended or revoked.
