Black Theatre Troupe Set to Dazzle with THE AFRICAN COMPANY PRESENTS RICHARD III

Phoenix, AZ — The Black Theatre Troupe has announced its upcoming production of THE AFRICAN COMPANY PRESENTS RICHARD III, a compelling drama rooted in historical events. Directed by Chanel Bragg, the performances are set to take place from February 7 to 23, 2025, at the Helen K. Mason Performing Arts Center.
This significant work, crafted by playwright Carlyle Brown, tells the story of the African Company, the first known Black theater troupe in America. Operating in 1821 New York City, they faced considerable adversity while staging Shakespeare’s Richard III. Under the threat posed by rival theater owner Stephen Price, the troupe remained resilient, exemplifying art’s power to confront oppression and inspire societal change. William Henry Brown emerged as a pivotal figure during this era, becoming America’s first Black playwright.
The cast features Roosevelt Watts Jr. in the role of William Henry Brown, alongside Tanner J. Conley as James Hewlett, a groundbreaking Black actor in Shakespeare’s works. Cynnita Agent will play Ann Johnson, while Ken Love, Shonda Royall, Derek Neumann, and CJ Mascarelli round out the ensemble, portraying characters crucial to the narrative.
Director Chanel Bragg, known for her extensive experience in theater across the nation, aims to deliver an authentic depiction of this historic moment upon her directorial debut with the Troupe. Her vision promises to enhance the narrative’s emotional depth and resonance.
