Bipartisan Outrage Erupts Over Anti-Semitic Vandalism at Tucson Synagogue

By Matthew Holloway |
Vandalism at the Chabad Tucson-Young Israel Synagogue has ignited outrage following the discovery of anti-Semitic graffiti this week. The markings, which include phrases like “End Apartheid” and “Abolish Israel,” were found at the historic synagogue, established in 1948 by the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, a response to the Holocaust and the rise of Nazi Germany.
Congressman Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ06) expressed his condemnation on social media, stating, “I am disgusted by this antisemitic act. Jewish residents in Tucson deserve to feel safe in their own communities and places of worship.” His sentiments reflect a broader call for safety and respect for religious spaces.
Democrat State Rep. Alma Hernandez also condemned the act, emphasizing the relationship between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. In her post, she expressed shock that such hateful vandalism still occurs in 2025, asserting, “This is a synagogue NOT a political office. Shameful that we keep seeing this vile targeting of the Jewish community.”
This incident marks the second act of vandalism against the synagogue in recent years. Previously, in 2021, a Nazi Swastika and anti-Semitic slurs were painted on its entrance. Rabbi Yehuda Ceitlin confirmed this disturbing trend, stating, “This hate must stop!”
The Tucson Police Department is currently investigating the act as a hate crime. Rabbi Ceitlin highlighted the incident’s intention to intimidate the Jewish community, asserting their determination to remain unshaken by such acts of hatred.
The incident has garnered international attention, with Member of the Israeli Knesset Michal Cotler-Wunsh commenting on the implications of the graffiti. She noted its symbolism as a manifestation of an ancient, evolving hatred that has been repurposed in contemporary discourse.
In light of this event, the Anti-Defamation League of Arizona issued a statement expressing grave concern over rising anti-Semitic incidents in the state. Deputy Regional Director Sarah Kader remarked on the heartbreaking nature of this vandalism, especially as it coincided with the release of the ADL’s annual audit reporting a 23% increase in anti-Semitic vandalism in Arizona.
