Biggs Unveils Bold Bill to Combat ‘Weaponization’ of Education Department Against Christian Colleges

Congressman Andy Biggs (R-AZ5) has introduced the Guarding Religious And Career Education (GRACE) Act, aiming to dismantle the Department of Education’s Office of Enforcement within the Office of Federal Student Aid. According to the American Principles Project (APP), this office has disproportionately targeted faith-based and career-focused educational institutions.

The APP highlights that nearly 70% of enforcement actions were directed at these schools, which enroll less than 10% of total students nationwide. Biggs pointed to the case of Grand Canyon University (GCU), America’s largest Christian university, which faced a controversial $37.7 million fine—an action he argues exemplifies the office’s biased enforcement.

In a recent press release, Biggs stated, “I introduced the GRACE Act to combat the weaponization of the Department of Education that occurred under Joe Biden’s regime.” He has also reached out to Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, urging an investigation into the alleged targeting of Christian schools and technical institutions amidst ongoing workforce reductions within the department.

In his letter, Biggs emphasized the need to assess potential ideological targeting and hold accountable those involved. He referenced GCU’s ongoing appeal against the hefty fine related to claims of misrepresenting doctoral program costs—a charge the university vehemently denies. GCU argues that the allegations have been dismissed in multiple reviews, including federal court assessments.

McMahon recently stated on Fox News that her decision to terminate a substantial portion of the Department’s staff aligns with a directive to effectively shut down the agency. She affirmed, “That was the president’s mandate. His directive to me clearly is to shut down the Department of Education.”

In light of these changes, Biggs has called for the Office of Enforcement’s elimination through the GRACE Act, asserting that it serves more as a tool for ideological enforcement than proper oversight. He stressed, “The targeting of Christian universities and career colleges must end.”
