Paul Shirk, the beloved Maricopa historian, has died at 76

Paul Shirk, a dedicated member of the Maricopa community and president of the Maricopa Historical Society, passed away on Sunday at the age of 76. A resident for 18 years, Shirk’s impact on the city was profound.

Originally from Springfield, Illinois, Shirk earned a graduate degree in education from the University of California, Los Angeles. He initially served in school administration in San Bernardino, California, before relocating to Maricopa’s Homestead neighborhood in 2007.

In Maricopa, Shirk immersed himself in community service, working with several organizations, including the Maricopa Education Foundation and the Maricopa Arts Task Force. However, it was his role in the Maricopa Historical Society that truly defined his legacy.

Mayor Nancy Smith praised Shirk’s leadership, describing him as a “fabulous leader” who prioritized the community. “He wanted to ensure that all generations were represented in history and had the opportunity to understand how our community was started and has continued to grow,” she said.

During a city council meeting on Tuesday, Councilmember Eric Goettl remarked on Shirk’s passing, stating that Maricopa lost “another one of Maricopa’s great ones.” Shirk was celebrated for making the city’s history accessible to residents.

Councilmember Bob Marsh also expressed his condolences, calling Shirk a “great man, great friend, great supporter and a great historian.” His contributions to preserving and promoting local history were deeply appreciated.

Volunteer Jim Irving, who met Shirk over a decade ago, fondly remembered their collaboration on a historical exhibit that highlighted prominent African American figures in Maricopa. The project reflected Shirk’s commitment to inclusivity and representation in historical narratives.

Peg Chapados, a member of the Maricopa Arts and Cultural Affairs Committee, described Shirk as “a true champion of Maricopa and our history.” She highlighted his unwavering dedication, stating, “He never shied away from any project or program that helped affirm Maricopa’s proud history and prosperous future.”

Shirk’s legacy as a historian, mentor, and friend will endure in the memories of those who knew him. His passion for the community and its history has left an indelible mark on Maricopa.
