Becky London stars in staging of interactive, totalitarian teacher comedy ‘Miss Margarida’s Way’

The Sedona International Film Festival will showcase “Miss Margarida’s Way” live at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre on June 7 and 8.

This production features Becky London in the lead role and is directed by Jay Goldenberg, under the banner of the festival’s new Sedona Professional Theatre Company.

Originally premiering on Broadway in 1977, “Miss Margarida’s Way” remains both humorous and poignant. The play earned a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Estelle Parsons and also garnered a Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

A satirical piece written by Roberto Athayde, the play unfolds within a classroom setting where the audience becomes part of the experience. The narrative compares the teacher to a dictator, illustrating themes of totalitarianism. Viewers around the globe have lauded this allegory, with the audience embodying the student body.

According to a festival press release, “Welcome to Miss Margarida’s classroom. It is the first day of the academic year. Miss Margarida has a lot to teach you this year, and it will be done ‘Miss Margarida’s way.’ Expect a mix of love and discipline. Topics like sex education are off the table, and lunchtime depends solely on her discretion. Prepare for an engaging experience.”

Becky London, a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, boasts a career rich in comedic performance. Her diverse experience spans from the off-Broadway hit “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” to the serious film “United 93.”

Her Broadway credits include works such as “Marlene” at Lincoln Center and “Othello” with Theatre for a New Audience. London has also made notable appearances in several off-Broadway productions and TV series, including “Law & Order” and “Blue Bloods.” As a founding member of the Unofficial New York Yale Cabaret, she directed and starred in various projects honoring playwright Wendy Wasserstein.

Jay Goldenberg has worn multiple hats as an actor, director, and acting coach across New York and Los Angeles. His impressive client list includes the likes of Salma Hayek and Michael Chiklis. He currently serves as the director of education at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and holds a master’s in acting from NYU.

“Miss Margarida’s Way” is presented with support from Renee and Doug Leuthold and Chuck Marr.

The performances will take place on Saturday, June 7, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 8, at 4 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
