Castaneda & Pickett each have a goal & assist as Aztecs rack up 8th shutout

The Pima Community College men’s soccer team continued their impressive season on Saturday, securing a 4-0 victory against Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix. With this win, the Aztecs improved their record to 11-1, including a 10-1 mark in ACCAC play. This match also marked their fourth consecutive shutout and eighth overall this season.

Ranked No. 4 nationally, the Aztecs dominated the match from the outset. Freshman Robert Castaneda from Nogales High School opened the scoring just five minutes in, with an assist from sophomore D’Andre Pickett. Remarkably, Pickett, typically a defender, found his way to the goal shortly after, doubling the lead in the 9th minute.

Throughout the first half, the Aztecs maintained their offensive pressure, culminating in another goal by freshman Jay Hogan in the 42nd minute, marking his fourth consecutive game with a score. Castaneda contributed again early in the second half, assisting Ismael Ruiz in extending the lead.

Pima’s defense was formidable, allowing no shots on goal from the Pumas in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jose Carlos Ortiz made three saves, enhancing the team’s shutout efforts.

The Aztecs will aim to keep their momentum going when they host Mesa Community College at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
