Aztec Women Stun Pensacola State with Epic Comeback Victory

The Pima Community College women’s soccer team, seeded sixth, showcased resilience in a thrilling contest on Monday during the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, narrowly defeating the tenth-seeded Pensacola State College 4-3.
The match was marked by dramatic swings in momentum, with Pima initially trailing 2-0 before staging a comeback. In a critical moment during the 87th minute, sophomore Lizzie Walker executed a precise left-footed shot just inside the box, securing the lead at 4-3. The assist came from freshman Samantha Mendez, who set up the play with a timely tap.
“I’m so proud of everybody,” said sophomore Uriah Burrell. “It was hectic and chaotic for a while. We managed to come together and finished strong.”
Pensacola State drew first blood with goals from Vivian Kettenhausen and Aiyannah Robinson, who struck in the 17th and 50th minutes, respectively. Pima responded in the 70th minute when Burrell, capitalizing on a defensive lapse, scored from a breakaway set up by Phoebe Knisley.
“I heard Coach Carlos telling me to boot it. I anticipated the opportunity and aimed for the corners,” Burrell recounted.
The Aztecs now turn their attention to Wednesday’s match between Heartland Community College and Pensacola State. The outcome of this match will determine Pima’s advancement potential, with the possibility of a three-way tie looming. “I’m proud of how we played together in the end. It showed our unity,” Burrell concluded.
