Aztec Softball Shatters Records with 6 Homers and 27 Runs in Doubleheader Victory
The Pima Community College softball team (4-0) wrapped up a successful weekend at the College of Southern Nevada Kickoff Classic in Henderson, Nevada, with impressive offensive performances. The Aztecs tallied six home runs and scored 27 runs total across two games on Saturday.
Freshman Jiselle Nunez from Tucson Magnet High School demonstrated her prowess at the plate, hitting .556 with six RBIs, four runs scored, and two home runs. Sophomore Alyssa Noriega, hailing from Pueblo High School, matched Nunez’s efforts with five hits, contributing two RBIs and scoring three runs. Additionally, sophomore Aubrey Marx of Cienega High School recorded four hits, driving in three runs and crossing home three times herself. Freshman Arianna Flores and sophomore Jessica Thompson excelled in the circle, each earning a win during the tournament.
In their first match on Saturday, the Aztecs rallied for a remarkable comeback against the Snow College Badgers, winning 13-8. After falling behind 8-6 in the sixth inning, Pima ignited a late-game surge. Sophomore Natalya Rivera initiated the comeback with a lead-off single and later scored, narrowing the deficit. The Aztecs delivered six runs in the seventh, punctuated by a two-run homer from freshman Belen Camacho and a sacrifice fly from Rivera, ultimately sealing the victory.
Rivera’s contributions included a three-run home run in the first inning, while Marx added another home run of her own. Throughout the match, Noriega and Ortiz also showcased their offensive capabilities, with multiple hits and runs scored. Flores exhibited skill in relief, striking out six batters over three and one-third innings.
In the following game, the Aztecs dominated the Arizona Western College Matadors, finishing with a score of 14-4. Pima never trailed in this match, establishing a commanding lead early with a seven-run third inning. Nunez hit a grand slam during this crucial inning, which effectively put the game out of reach for the Matadors.
Nunez finished the game with an impressive three hits and six RBIs. Freshman Amerika Lopez-Bedoy also shined, contributing two hits with three RBIs. Thompson earned the win for the Aztecs, pitching four and one-third innings while allowing four runs.
Pima Community College will kick off its ACCAC conference play on Saturday, February 1, with a doubleheader against Mesa Community College, starting at noon.
