ASU given second life, Sun Devils head to NCAA Tournament rejuvenated

ASU baseball concluded its season with a four-game losing streak, narrowly avoiding a fourth consecutive absence from the NCAA Tournament.

Coach Willie Bloomquist characterized the end of the season as a “double bogey on 18.” Yet, the team pushed through to secure a playoff position, entering the tournament with a mix of relief and confidence.

The Sun Devils always believed they deserved a postseason spot and aim to play freely after overcoming their regional struggles.

“The last couple of years have been close, but we haven’t cracked through the door, and now we are,” said Bloomquist, expressing hope for the program’s direction.

However, ASU faced significant challenges toward the season’s end. The recent slump nearly derailed their playoff chances.

“The way the conference tournament ended, we know that’s not the type of team we are,” remarked second baseman Kyle Walker.

Vu, a fellow player, emphasized the need to move forward: “It’s behind us and we flushed it. I have a bad memory, so I’m already starting to forget about it.”

While Vu looks to the future, Walker draws from past experiences. He recalls playing in a regional last year and emphasizes the importance of enjoying the game while giving it all. “It’s going to be the biggest game of your life,” he noted.

For senior first baseman Jacob Tobias, this moment is deeply satisfying after years of hard work. “It’s almost a little emotional just because it’s like we did it finally,” he said.

Bloomquist acknowledged that the weight of their journey has strengthened the team. “We can relax and go play our game, hopefully now, and make a run at this thing,” he stated.

As for the tournament’s first game, Bloomquist opted not to disclose the starting pitcher, maintaining an element of surprise for UC Irvine. While Ben Jacobs has been the primary starter, Jack Martinez brings invaluable tournament experience.

Ultimately, Bloomquist is focused on maximizing the team’s potential without holding back. “I don’t believe in saving arms,” he concluded, indicating his readiness to go all in from the very first game.
