As Diamondbacks continue to search for a closer, the team signs Justin Martinez to a 5-year, $18M extension

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have secured a significant addition to their roster, signing right-handed pitcher Justin Martinez to an $18 million contract over five years. This agreement comes as Martinez vies for the closer position, a pivotal role for the team.

Announced on Saturday, the new contract surpasses a previous one-year deal established on March 11, which offered a $772,200 salary in the majors and $335,700 in the minors. The latest terms include a $2 million signing bonus and a salary structure that will see him earning $1.5 million in 2025, escalating to $5.5 million by 2029. Additionally, there are club options that could extend his earning potential to $7 million in 2030 and $9 million in 2031.

Manager Torey Lovullo noted that Martinez is still in the mix for the closer role, alongside left-hander A.J. Puk and right-hander Kevin Ginkel. In the previous season, Martinez recorded eight saves and posted a 2.48 ERA, despite a high walk count of 36 over 72 2/3 innings.
