Arizona’s rich contribution to “Saturday Night Live” will be highlighted as the show marks its 50th anniversary this weekend.
Since its debut in 1975, “SNL” has welcomed multiple performers from the Grand Canyon State to its iconic Studio 8H. This milestone celebration will also feature a variety of celebrity guests engaging with audiences in a nostalgic tribute.
Among the notable Arizonans who’ve graced the “SNL” stage is Aidy Bryant. Raised in the Valley, she attended Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix. After honing her comedic skills in Chicago, Bryant joined “SNL” as a featured player in 2012 and became a full cast member the following year, staying until 2022.
Another prominent figure is David Spade, who spent his formative years in Arizona. Following his time at Scottsdale Community College, he became a writer for “SNL” in 1990. Spade subsequently joined the cast, where he collaborated with Chris Farley on films like “Tommy Boy” and “Black Sheep.” After leaving the show in 1996, he returned as a host and now co-hosts a podcast with fellow alum Dana Carvey.
Rob Schneider, while originally from California, has recently settled in Arizona. A former “SNL” cast member from 1990-1994, Schneider is best remembered for his quirky character, The Richmeister. Since moving to Arizona, he has engaged in various educational initiatives.
Michael Longfellow, another product of Phoenix, made his way into the “SNL” cast in 2022 after performing in Los Angeles comedy clubs. His journey reflects the ongoing influence of Arizona’s comedic scene.
Emma Stone, also an Arizonan, is notably a member of the Five-Timers Club, having hosted “SNL” at least five times. The Oscar winner launched her career in local theaters before hosting for the first time in 2010, shortly after her breakout in “Easy A.”
Next on the list is Kristen Wiig. Though she spent only a brief period in Arizona, she attended the University of Arizona. Inspired by an acting class, she later became a key player on “SNL” from 2005 until 2012.
Linda Ronstadt, the legendary singer from Tucson, has made multiple appearances on “SNL,” with a memorable duet alongside Paul Simon in 1987.
Senator John McCain holds the distinction of being one of the few politicians to host “SNL” while in office. He first took the helm in October 2002 and returned during his presidential campaign in 2008.
