Wednesday deadline looms for Arizonans without health insurance to buy Obamacare policy

Arizonans aiming to secure health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) face a crucial deadline: they must select their policies by Wednesday, January 15. Coverage will take effect on February 1, marking the last open enrollment period of the year for those not covered by employer insurance.

As of January 4, a record 409,548 Arizonans have already enrolled through the ACA online exchange. This figure represents a significant increase of 15 percent compared to 2024, when over 348,000 participants signed up, echoing a broader trend of rising enrollment amidst continued outreach efforts.

Nationally, nearly 24 million Americans have acquired insurance for 2025 through the ACA’s marketplaces, according to the Biden administration. President Biden attributed this surge in enrollment to his administration’s initiatives aimed at reducing healthcare costs and improving access to insurance, even in the face of political opposition.

Biden stated, “When I took office, I promised to bring down healthcare costs and streamline the enrollment process. I urge Congress to maintain our progress by extending the ACA premium tax credit this year.”

Key measures such as enhanced tax credits and subsidies have played a significant role in attracting new enrollees. For instance, legislation under the Inflation Reduction Act capped insurance costs at 8.5 percent of a household’s income, with individuals in families earning below 150 percent of the federal poverty level possibly qualifying for zero-premium coverage.

According to the Biden administration, four out of five individuals shopping for health plans in 2024 could secure coverage for less than $10 per month. However, these subsidies, critical for affordability, are set to expire at the end of the year, raising concerns about the ACA’s future amidst a shifting political landscape.

Looking ahead, President-elect Donald Trump has voiced intentions to propose new healthcare reforms, albeit with limited concrete details. He emphasized the necessity of protecting individuals with pre-existing conditions while looking for ways to reduce premium costs.
