Arizona’s Olympians will be on the basketball court, track, golf course and more on Sunday. Here’s who you need to watch.
PARIS, France — As the second half of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris begins, Arizona’s athletes have already made a significant impact. Gymnast Jade Carey has earned two medals, including a gold and a bronze. Skateboarder Jagger Eaton clinched his second Olympic medal, a silver. Swimmer Léon Marchand dominated in his home country, securing four gold medals.
On Sunday, the potential for more medals looms large for Arizona’s Olympians. Here are the key events and athletes to watch, along with their schedule (all times are Arizona time).
3×3 Basketball
USA men vs. The Netherlands, 10:05 a.m. Jimmer Fredette, a former member of the Phoenix Suns, will represent the U.S. Team USA (2-4) is currently in fifth place in pool play. Depending on Sunday’s results, the play-in round games are slated for 12:30 p.m. and 1:05 p.m.
Archery
Men’s Individual 1/8 Elimination Round, 1:22 a.m. Brady Ellison from Globe will compete against Turkey’s Berkim Tumer. Should he advance, the quarterfinals will begin at 4 a.m., with subsequent rounds leading up to the gold medal match at 5:46 a.m.
5×5 Basketball
Women’s group phase: Nigeria vs. Canada, 4:30 a.m. Featuring Promise Amukamara, who attended Apollo High School and Arizona State University. USA vs. Germany, 8:15 a.m. Includes Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Kahleah Copper, all from the Phoenix Mercury. Team USA, currently leading Group C, needs a win against Germany to secure the group.
Track and Field
Women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase begins at 1:05 a.m. Women’s Hammer Throw qualification will commence at 1:20 a.m. with Beatrice Nedberge Llano from ASU competing in Group A. Men’s 110-meter hurdles will start at 2:50 a.m., featuring Freddie Crittenden from Phoenix Track Club. Men’s 1,500-meter semifinals start at 12:10 p.m. with USA’s Hobbs Kessler and Great Britain’s Neil Gourley, both training in Flagstaff.
Water Polo
Women’s preliminary round: Canada vs. The Netherlands, 9:30 a.m., includes Arizona State University’s Blaire McDowell and Bente Rogge. France will face Greece in another key match. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
Golf
Men’s stroke play final round: Spain’s Jon Rahm from ASU is tied for 1st place and will tee off at 12:28 p.m. David Puig, also from ASU, and Wyndham Clark from Scottsdale will compete at 11:33 a.m. and 9:33 a.m. respectively, both tied for 23rd place. Nick Taylor from Scottsdale will tee off at 9:44 a.m., tied for 34th place. Medals for the top three finishers will be decided on Sunday, with the possibility of sudden-death playoffs.
Arizona sports
Phoenix is home to four major professional sports teams: the Arizona Cardinals (NFL), Phoenix Suns (NBA), Phoenix Mercury (WNBA), and Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB). The Cardinals play at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, while the Suns and Mercury share the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix.
