Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen was in Washington, D.C., this week for a notable event at the White House, where President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order aimed at restricting men from competing in women’s sports.

The executive order highlighted concerns over fairness in athletics, asserting that the inclusion of men in women’s sports poses risks to women and girls. It stated, “In recent years, many educational institutions and athletic associations have allowed men to compete in women’s sports. This is demeaning, unfair, and dangerous to women and girls, and denies women and girls the equal opportunity to participate and excel in competitive sports.”

Furthermore, the order proclaimed a commitment to withdrawing federal funds from programs that do not ensure fair athletic opportunities for women and girls, labeling such practices as humiliating and denying privacy. It emphasized the U.S. stance against male participation in women’s sports on grounds of safety and dignity.

Petersen has played a critical role in advocating for Arizona’s Save Women’s Sports Act since its introduction in 2022. Following a Ninth Circuit Court ruling that upheld an injunction against the law, Petersen and his colleagues are currently awaiting a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court regarding a potential hearing on the matter.

Petersen expressed optimism about his visit to the White House, stating, “The war against women and girls is now taking a dramatic turn for the better, and sanity is being reinstated. This is exactly the common sense that Arizona and America voted for.” He emphasized the public support for his stance, citing a Gallup poll indicating that 69% of Americans believe transgender athletes should only compete on teams that match their birth gender. This figure marked a notable increase in public sentiment over the past two years.

As Petersen concluded, “I’m proud to join President Trump today in Washington D.C. for this historic moment. He is going to make girls’ sports great again, and I know that he will never stop fighting for us.”
