Arizona Media Association Partners with National Coalition to Elevate Local Newspapers

PHOENIX — The Arizona Media Association (AMA) has joined a national coalition aimed at safeguarding the role of local newspapers across the United States.
Launched this week, the America’s Newspapers State Advocacy Coalition (ANSAC) unites state press associations and newspaper advocacy groups. Its objective is to bolster local journalism through cooperative advocacy, resource sharing, and unified messaging on state and national fronts.
Chris Kline, President & CEO of the Arizona Media Association and Arizona Local News Foundation, emphasized the significance of local journalism in connecting communities. “We’ve seen the power of local journalism to hold institutions accountable and amplify underrepresented voices,” he stated. Joining ANSAC enhances their mission to fortify the local news ecosystem through impactful advocacy and collaboration.
The formation of this coalition responds to the challenges faced by the industry, including shifting business models and regulatory pressures. It focuses on supporting family-owned and independently operated newspapers to ensure they continue serving communities effectively.
Lisa Simpson, Vice President of Member Services at the Arizona Media Association, noted that the coalition will amplify the voice of local journalism. “We aim to protect community connections for future generations,” she remarked.
As a founding member, AMA will collaborate with other state associations to promote policies ensuring press freedom, copyright protection, and the sustainability of newsroom operations.
Dean Ridings, CEO of America’s Newspapers, highlighted the coalition’s proactive approach. “ANSAC offers associations like AMA the chance to lead advocacy efforts and initiate meaningful change,” he asserted.
