Arizona politicians respond to apparent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump

PHOENIX — An assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump occurred on Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. This incident marks the second such attempt against him in recent months.

The FBI reported that while Trump played golf, U.S. Secret Service agents noticed an AK-style rifle protruding from nearby shrubs. In response, one agent discharged their weapon, prompting the assailant to abandon the gun and flee in an SUV. Notably, the gunman left behind the rifle, two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera. Authorities apprehended the suspect in a neighboring county.

This alarming event follows an earlier incident where Trump was grazed by a bullet during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. With the November elections approaching, security concerns have intensified.

In the aftermath, Trump reassured supporters via a statement, declaring, “I AM SAFE AND WELL!” He emphasized his unwavering commitment to his campaign and supporters, urging for unity and peace.

Responses from Arizona’s politicians varied, reflecting a spectrum of perspectives. Arizona Republican Party Chair Gina Swoboda called for enhanced security measures for Trump, stating that “chaos must be brought to an end.” She reiterated the need for leaders to serve without fear for their safety.

In contrast, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Ruben Gallego condemned the violence, labeling the incident as “unacceptable and disturbing.” He stressed that political violence has no place in a democratic society.

Arizona Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake expressed relief over Trump’s safety, praying for divine comfort for him and his family while advocating for a united front to restore Trump to the presidency.

Rep. Andy Biggs offered a brief prayer for Trump’s continued protection, expressing his commitment to safeguarding the former president and his family.

Senator Mark Kelly also weighed in, saying he was thankful Trump was unharmed, stressing that political violence is incompatible with democracy. He praised the quick response of law enforcement during the incident.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes echoed similar sentiments, applauding law enforcement’s swift actions and calling for a collective denouncement of political violence.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion, prompting politicians from both sides to express their views on the implications for political discourse and safety in the United States.
