Elected officials across Arizona gathered to observe the first anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks that shook Israel last year. One year ago, Hamas launched a surprise assault on unsuspecting communities, resulting in tragic loss and devastation for innocent lives.
Arizona Speaker of the House Ben Toma announced a significant legislative proclamation designating October 7, 2024, as a Day of Observance. “The state of Arizona stands in solidarity with Israel as they defend their nation and pursue peace,” he remarked, emphasizing a shared grief for those affected by the attacks.
Toma’s proclamation urges all Arizonans to participate in a moment of silence to remember the victims and express unity with those still held captive. This call to action reflects a commitment to community and resilience in the face of adversity.
In a heartfelt statement, Governor Katie Hobbs shared her sentiments, stating that the brutal attacks by Hamas took away the hopes of countless innocent individuals. “My heart is with the families who mourn, the hostages who should be home, and the entire country of Israel as they pray and grieve,” she expressed.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes condemned the violence perpetrated by Hamas, noting its profound impact on Jewish communities worldwide. “Together we must stand firm against all forms of hatred and commit to building a world that values dialogue over division,” she urged, advocating for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
State Senator Frank Carroll condemned the actions of Hamas and Iran, calling for a united front against terrorism. He emphasized the need for Arizonans to vocalize their support for justice, saying, “May the good Lord protect our world from the Iranian-directed terrorists who seek destruction.”
State Representative Alma Hernandez reflected on the painful impact of the attacks, stating that many realized the true nature of their relationships that day. “May we never forget the innocent lives taken from us, and the 101 hostages still held by Hamas,” she said.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell took a moment to remember the lives lost and prayed for the safe return of hostages. “Today we commemorate the one-year anniversary and pray for the families affected by this tragedy,” she added.
Peoria Mayor Jason Beck also weighed in, recalling his firsthand observations of the aftermath of the attacks. Beck reaffirmed his support for Israel, stressing that “America needs to know that Israel’s fight is our fight.” He displayed his solidarity by proudly flying the flag of Israel.
As the community reflects on this solemn anniversary, the collective hope for peace and remembrance remains strong amidst the ongoing struggles faced by those affected by the tragic events of October 7, 2023.
