Arizona Lawmakers Secure Diamondbacks’ Future at Chase Field Without Raising Taxes

A recently passed bill in Arizona aims to secure the future of Chase Field and retain the Arizona Diamondbacks in downtown Phoenix. This legislation, known as House Bill 2704, received bipartisan support from the state legislature and has gained the favor of Governor Katie Hobbs.

Spearheaded by Representative Jeff Weninger (R-LD13), the bill proposes a funding strategy for essential repairs without imposing new taxes on residents. It capitalizes on existing state sales and income tax revenues generated by the team and its events to finance stadium maintenance.

“This is a smart, responsible solution that keeps the Diamondbacks where they belong—at Chase Field in the heart of our capital city,” said Rep. Weninger. He emphasized that the costs would be covered by revenue from the team’s activities, safeguarding Arizona taxpayers from additional financial burdens. The initiative aims to preserve jobs and maintain the economic impact of the Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

As part of the agreement, the Diamondbacks have committed at least $250 million for future improvements to Chase Field, supplementing over $200 million already invested by the team—despite not owning the facility.

With the team’s lease set to expire in 2027, pressure has mounted on lawmakers to devise a sustainable plan to keep the Diamondbacks in the state. Advocates of HB2704 believe it achieves a balance between fiscal prudence and necessary economic investment, keeping tax revenues local.

Derrick Hall, President and CEO of the Diamondbacks, expressed gratitude for the legislative efforts. “I want to thank Representative Weninger, all of the supportive lawmakers, and Governor Hobbs for the leadership with HB2704,” he said, noting the broad support for addressing funding for the stadium.

Chase Field, which opened in 1998 and has welcomed over 55 million fans, is pivotal to the economic landscape of downtown Phoenix. Legislators assert that this bill will ensure the stadium remains a modern venue for years to come, all while avoiding the strain on state funds.

Governor Hobbs has shown public support for HB2704, and her signature is anticipated soon. Once ratified, the bill will initiate a new chapter for both the Diamondbacks and Chase Field.
