Arizona Lawmaker Accuses Hobbs and Mayes of Outsourcing State Duties

The Phoenix law firm Timothy La Sota has formally requested an investigation by Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell into allegations against Arizona’s Democratic Attorney General, Kris Mayes. The complaint, presented on Wednesday, centers on potential misuse of public funds for campaign-related activities.
According to the complaint, La Sota references A.R.S. § 16-192(A), which prohibits state officials from utilizing public resources to influence elections. This includes a broad range of resources—from financial assets to personnel.
In a statement shared by La Sota, two instances are highlighted where Mayes allegedly breached this law. They draw evidence from her social media posts and coverage by The Arizona Republic.
The complaint asserts that a recent event at Central High School in Phoenix functioned as a political rally rather than a legitimate community meeting. La Sota claims it was organized by Mayes with the intent to undermine Republican Congress members David Schweikert and Juan Ciscomani. Mayes reportedly stated, “If I have to, I’ll go hold the town hall in David Schweikert’s district…to give his constituents the right to speak out about this.”
La Sota further alleges that the staff from Mayes’ office facilitated the organization of this event, despite the attendance of notable Democratic Attorneys General being unadvertised. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was present, as shown in a livestream.
Additionally, the complaint posits that Mayes used taxpayer funds for a political rally in Minnesota, also organized by Ellison, featuring New York Attorney General Letitia James.
La Sota concluded, “While we recognize Ms. Mayes’ rights to express her opinions and affiliate with various individuals, she must not leverage taxpayer resources for such purposes. Public schools should not be venues for political rallies. We urge an investigation into Mayes’ actions and seek accountability.”
