Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva Passes Away at 77 After Courageous Fight Against Lung Cancer

Democratic Congressman Raul Grijalva passed away on March 13 in Tucson, following a diagnosis of lung cancer in April 2024. He was 77 years old.
Grijalva recently secured a 12th term in Congress during the November elections. Just a month prior, he announced that it would be his final term if he emerged victorious.
As Arizona’s longest-serving congressional representative, Grijalva participated in only a few votes throughout 2025 and was largely absent during 2024.
His congressional staff released a heartfelt statement, describing Grijalva’s kind and humble nature. They emphasized his belief in treating everyone as equals.
Family and friends remember him fondly for his habit of giving gifts, playing music in his office, and his genuine interest in people’s lives. “The Congressman cared deeply for his staff and for the communities he served,” the statement continued. “Together, we fought for the people of Southern Arizona, helping families in need. While we are heartbroken by this loss, we are committed to upholding his legacy.”
