Arizona writers say new book is a love letter to places obscure and famous in State 48

PHOENIX — Local authors Lisa Schnebly Heidinger and Julie Morrison have inspired Arizonans to explore their home state with their new book, “Arizona FriendTrips.” This work intertwines poetry and prose, capturing both well-known and lesser-known destinations in Arizona.

Schnebly Heidinger described the book as a “candid love letter and light critique of places both famous and obscure.” The narrative follows their journey alongside Schnebly Heidinger’s father, showcasing landmarks from the Grand Canyon to hidden gems like Lees Ferry.

Each travel stop is complemented by Morrison’s poetry, while Schnebly Heidinger provides prose. The selection process for locations was not rigid; it often stemmed from personal interest or curiosity. “One of us wanted the other to see it,” she explained, emphasizing the organic nature of their adventure.

Traveling together revealed the essence of their friendship. According to Schnebly Heidinger, a good travel partner is someone who can find humor in tough situations. Her reflections on companionship highlight the joy of shared experiences, particularly with her long-time travel partner, her father, and Morrison.

With its publication through University of Arizona Publishing, “Arizona FriendTrips” has taken on a life of its own. Schnebly Heidinger likened this moment to a mother seeing her baby for the first time, acknowledging the vulnerability that comes with exposing their creation to public scrutiny.

The book is now available for purchase, and readers have the opportunity to meet the authors at a signing event at Changing Hands bookstore in Phoenix on February 12 at 6:30 p.m.
