Apache Junction Reflects on the Legacy of Officer Gabriel Facio

By Matthew Holloway |
The Apache Junction community is mourning the loss of Police Officer Gabriel Facio, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the line of duty. Facio, 46, passed away on Sunday, six days after being shot during a traffic stop related to a road rage incident on June 2.
Facio, a three-year veteran of the Apache Junction Police Department (AJPD), was the department’s first officer killed in the line of duty. According to AJPD Chief Michael Pooley, Facio immigrated from Mexico with aspirations of becoming a police officer, a dream he fulfilled in the United States.
The incident unfolded when Facio pulled over 37-year-old Roger Nunez, who was brandishing a firearm. Nunez initially walked away from officers, disregarding their commands, until he allegedly urged them to shoot him. When officers used “less lethal ammo,” Nunez turned and opened fire, striking Facio. Responding officers returned fire, critically injuring Nunez.
Arizona Representative Walt Blackman expressed condolences honoring Facio’s service. He wrote, “Our community is grieving the loss of Officer Gabriel Facio, who bravely served in the line of duty.” Blackman emphasized that Facio’s passing underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officials every day.
Beyond his role as an officer, Facio was a dedicated family man. Blackman noted, “He was a devoted husband, a proud father, a beloved son and brother.” Facio’s prior law enforcement experience across Phoenix and the Valley established his reputation for professionalism and compassion.
“To the Facio family, please accept my deepest condolences,” Blackman added. “Your grief is shared by all of us in Legislative District 7 and across Arizona.” He also extended gratitude to fellow officers and the community for their support during this difficult period.
Apache Junction Police Chief Pooley acknowledged the overwhelming community support in his statement, saying, “A little piece of us was lost as Officer Facio took his last breath.” He added that Facio’s legacy of service and passion for helping others will not be forgotten.
In tribute to Officer Facio, community members have rallied with support, a testament to his impact and dedication as a public servant. The outpouring of love reflects the profound respect held for a man who embodied courage and compassion in service of his community.
