Traffic in Maricopa was significantly disrupted yesterday afternoon when state troopers escorted a semi-truck transporting an oversized load: a SpaceX first-stage rocket. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) confirmed the vehicle was headed south on John Wayne Parkway, briefly halting normal traffic flow as it navigated the area.

ADOT spokesperson Steve Elliott clarified that this was not the first occurrence of such transport through the city. “It’s the same thing you saw in February; this is a SpaceX first stage empty rocket en route from New Mexico to California,” he stated, highlighting the logistical challenges involved.

This event mirrored a similar situation from February, when a SpaceX rocket successfully negotiated a challenging 90-degree turn onto John Wayne Parkway from Honeycutt Road. Currently, SpaceX does not have any launches scheduled from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, which remains the final destination for these massive components.

As the aerospace industry continues to advance, such transport activities are expected to recur, drawing attention to the intersection of transportation and space exploration in Arizona.
