American Legion Post 34 Honors National Poppy Month in Support of Veterans
Cave Creek – In November 2024, American Legion Post 34 will commemorate National Poppy Month by honoring fallen service members and offering support to local veterans and active-duty military personnel alongside their families. This initiative aims to address various medical and financial needs.
The auxiliary of Post 34 emphasizes that wearing a poppy serves as a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for liberty, freedom, and democracy. This practice not only acknowledges past sacrifices but also extends support to veterans for future generations.
Sandy Cuttino, president of the Post 34 Legion auxiliary, remarked, “The red poppy symbolizes the blood shed by those who fought and continue to fight for this country.” She referenced the poignant wartime poem “In Flanders Fields,” authored by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae during World War I, which memorializes soldiers who lost their lives in battle. The American Legion adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in 1920.
Locally, residents can find poppy donation boxes at various businesses or directly at American Legion Post 34, located at 6272 E. Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek, Arizona.
Founded in 1919, the American Legion advocates for veterans, active military, and their families. As a 501(c)(19) organization, it focuses on supporting veterans’ initiatives while promoting patriotism and responsible citizenship. The League remains a non-sectarian and non-political entity.
