AFVs Face Urgent Lane Change Challenges
In late March, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced a significant change regarding high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane access. The Federal Highway Administration informed state officials that, effective September 30, 2025, electric vehicles and other eligible alternative fuel vehicles with only a single occupant will no longer be allowed in HOV lanes during restricted hours.
To assist vehicle owners in understanding these upcoming changes, ADOT has launched a dedicated website. The site, available at www.azdot.gov/hovrule, provides information on the implications of this change and what vehicle owners can expect as the expiration of the current federal provision approaches.
