After 21 Years, Tucson’s Mike Rankin Set to Say Goodbye as City Attorney This September

Tucson City Attorney Mike Rankin has announced his retirement, effective September. With over 21 years in the role, he holds the record as the longest-serving city attorney in Tucson’s history, surpassing Fred Dean’s tenure from 1977 to 1994.
“It’s time,” Rankin remarked, expressing readiness for a change. He plans to enjoy his downtime and does not have immediate job prospects in mind.
City Council members recognize the significant gap his departure will create. Ward 2 Councilmember Paul Cunningham noted that Tucson is losing a remarkable talent. “It’s a huge loss,” he commented, emphasizing Rankin’s sound judgment and unwavering commitment to the city’s interests.
Ward 1 Councilmember Lane Santa Cruz shared similar sentiments, praising Rankin’s down-to-earth nature and dedication to both his family and the city. “He’s been a steady presence and a trusted problem-solver,” she said, looking forward to Rankin’s new adventures in retirement.
Ward 6 Councilmember Karin Uhlich highlighted Rankin’s respect on a state and national level, commending his intelligence and understanding of the law. She stated, “He has served Tucson well and can leave his position with great pride.” Uhlich has collaborated with Rankin since 2005.
Ward 3 Councilmember Kevin Dahl expressed his appreciation for Rankin’s clarity in explaining complex legal issues, indicating not just breadth of experience but effectiveness in communication.
Rankin’s tenure includes involvement in significant court cases, addressing issues such as homelessness, COVID mandates, gun regulations, and disputes with the Trump administration over federal contracts. He has served the city for over three decades, taking on the city attorney position in 2004.
The city attorney’s role encompasses leadership of the city prosecutor’s office as well as the civil division, providing essential legal counsel to the mayor, City Council, Tucson Police Department, and other city entities.
The City Council plans to discuss the selection process for a new city attorney during a meeting scheduled for June 17.
