A recent audio recording from a Catalina Foothills 9th grade health class has sparked controversy after being released by the advocacy group Save CFSD on X. The recording allegedly features a teacher discussing LGBTQ issues while critiquing the religious texts of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. In it, the educator suggests that “most parents aren’t understanding, aren’t accepting, or whatever.”

Save CFSD’s post highlighted the content of what they termed a “biased lecture,” urging students to question the beliefs imposed by their religious leaders and parents. The audio provokes significant discourse on the role of education in addressing sensitive topics.

The teacher, according to the recording, dives into discussions about sexuality and the influence of faith. “This group right here has open executions on the streets in some parts of the world where if somebody who’s identified as gay—caught by others—faces lethal consequences,” the voice states. This reference underscores the seriousness of the issues discussed, framing them within a broader societal context.

The discussion swiftly centers on religion. The instructor posits that longstanding interpretations of religious texts can shape perceptions of morality. “When we read these texts, it’s important to understand they originated thousands of years ago… Words may have changed in translation,” the teacher argues, leading into a nuanced examination of terms like “homosexuality” and their absence in ancient scriptures. This raises questions about whose interpretations are valid in today’s context.

The lesson then shifts to transgender identities, where the teacher explicates terms like “cisgender” and “transgender.” The explanation includes suggestions for how individuals might express their gender identity. The educator notes, “There’s probably going to be resistance from parents,” potentially stoking fear about acceptance at home.

Addressing students’ safety, the voice emphasizes, “Many teenagers are at risk of STDs and STIs out of fear.” This statement attempts to underscore the importance of making informed and personal decisions regarding one’s health and identity. The lesson concludes with a call for students to conduct their own research and consider their needs beyond societal pressures.

Arizona Women of Action (AZWOA) reacted strongly to the recording, asserting that such discussions do not align with the official curriculum of the Catalina Foothills School District. They suggest parents opt out of courses that include comprehensive sexuality education.

Furthermore, the AZWOA criticized the implications of the 2019 repeal of Arizona’s No Promo Homo law, arguing that it has allowed school districts to more easily incorporate controversial topics into their curricula.

As this discourse unfolds, community members are encouraged to engage with the Catalina Foothills School Board and the Superintendent to express their views. Regular board meetings take place at the district’s office, providing a platform for public input.
